Joint R&D Collaboration Aims to Lower the Real Estate Industry’s Carbon Footprint Through Circular Manufacturing Innovation

Takenaka Corporation (Headquarters: 1-13, 4-chome, Hommachi, Chuo-ku, Osaka, Japan; President: Masato Sasaki) and ChopValue Manufacturing Japan Co., Ltd. The collaboration focuses on wall paneling and construction materials using upcycled resources, to reduce cradle to cradle real estate embodied carbon and improve domestic material circularity.

Takenaka Corporation, one of Japan’s most respected architectural and construction firms, has long promoted sustainable building through its Circular Design-Build concept, which emphasizes reuse, recycling, and upcycling in place of conventional scrap-and-build methods. The company has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain by 2050, reflecting its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Tokyo-based ChopValue Japan has recycled over 7 tons of material at its first flagship Microfactory in Kawasaki. With plans to expand nationwide, the partnership with Takenaka paves the way for accelerated growth of future locations across Japan.

As the construction industry advances toward low-carbon, resource-efficient practices, the two companies are combining their expertise to address Japan’s shortage of sustainable domestic materials and the need for scalable circular systems.

By integrating ChopValue Japan’s innovative circular manufacturing technology, the joint R&D activities, underway since early 2025, aim to turn waste resources into engineered materials for construction use. The collaboration explores how upcycled materials can effectively replace conventional components, supporting Japan’s transition toward a circular built environment.

2. Joint Research and Development Details

(1) Focus Areas

The R&D program targets the development of engineered materials for wall paneling and other construction components. These materials will be produced from upcycled resources using ChopValue Japan’s proprietary micro-manufacturing processes.

(2) Validation and Testing

Research and testing are being conducted at Takenaka’s R&D facilities. Evaluations include fire resistance, durability, and architectural integration to ensure the materials meet high performance and safety standards for building use.

(3) Low-Carbon Innovation and Local Manufacturing

The collaboration seeks to establish a model for locally sourced, low-carbon construction materials. By transforming waste generated within Japan into high-value materials, the project supports domestic circular manufacturing and reduces environmental impact.

3. Future Outlook

Both companies plan to apply the research outcomes to pilot installations in building projects beginning next year. The findings will contribute to future commercialization efforts and support Japan’s transition toward a circular construction ecosystem.

本連携では、都市資源を再生したアップサイクル素材を活用し、内装材などの建築資材への応用を目指すことで、不動産のライフサイクル全体における炭素排出量の削減と、国内における資源循環の促進を図ります。

1. 背景および概要

竹中工務店は、日本を代表する総合建設会社として、従来の「スクラップ & ビルド」型に代わる「サーキュラーデザインビルド」のコンセプトに基づき、再利用・再資源化・アップサイクルを取り入れた持続可能な建築を推進してきました。

同社は、2050年までに竹中グループとサプライチェーン全体でのカーボンニュートラル実現を目標とし、環境負荷の低減に積極的に取り組んでいます。

一方、ChopValue Japanは、川崎市に開設した国内初のフラッグシップ・マイクロファクトリーで累計7トン以上の都市資源を再生。今後、全国展開を計画しており、本連携を通じてその拡大を加速させる意向です。

建設業界が低炭素かつ資源効率の高い仕組みへと移行する中、両社はそれぞれの専門性を結集し、日本国内における循環型建材の供給体制の整備と、スケーラブルな資源循環モデルの構築に取り組みます。

本共同研究開発は2025年初頭より開始しており、ChopValue Japanの循環型製造技術を活用して、都市資源を生かした内装材をはじめとするエンジニアード建材へと転換することを目指しています。

2. 共同研究開発の内容

(1）研究開発の主な領域

本プロジェクトでは、都市資源を活用し、ChopValue Japan独自のマイクロマニュファクチャリング技術によって製造される内装材等の建築用再構成材の開発を行います。

（2）評価・検証

竹中工務店の研究開発施設において、耐火性・耐久性・建築物としての適合性など、多角的な性能試験を実施し、建築資材としての高い品質・安全性を検証します。

（3）低炭素・地域循環モデルの構築

本連携では、日本国内で発生する都市資源を高付加価値のある建材へと再生させることで、地域発の低炭素型製造モデルを確立することを目指します。これにより、国内資源循環の促進と環境負荷のさらなる低減を両立させます。

3. 今後の展望

両社は、今回の共同研究成果をもとに、来年度から建築プロジェクトでの実証導入を予定しています。

研究結果は将来的な製品化および商用展開に活かされ、日本の建設業界における循環型建築エコシステムの構築を推進していきます。
