These measures form part of a larger strategy that addresses energy planning, land develop-ment, aviation emissions, and intermodal transportation—all of which will inform future capital investments.

A key element of the strat- egy is an ambitious zero-waste initiative at YVR’s main termi- nal. Defined as achieving a 90 per cent diversion of waste from landfills, the goal builds on the knowledge that 80 per cent of the terminal’s waste is divertible today. In the next three years, YVR will develop a detailed action plan to reach this target by 2040 or sooner, as an inte- gral component of the overall strategy.

YVR’s plan also places sig- nificant emphasis on protecting heritage and deepening relation- ships with local Indigenous communities. Recognizing that Sea Island is the tradi- tional, unceded territory of the Musqueam people, the airport is enhancing archaeological protection, cultural competency training, and community col- laboration. Additionally, the plan includes the creation of job and mentorship opportunities in heritage conservation specifi- cally for Musqueam members, marking a meaningful step in reconciliation.

Recognizing that the impacts of climate change are already being felt—from rising sea levels to extreme weather and heat waves—the plan outlines a range of adaptation measures. YVR is investing in upgraded dikes, climate-resilient infra- structure and enhancements to ensure airfield safety.

A comprehensive bio- inventory of Sea Island is also underway to chart species and habitats vulnerable to shifting climate patterns, ensuring that adaptive strategies are well- informed.
